Building on a sloping block doesn’t have to be a challenge
Sloping blocks are often the most affordable on the market, especially on the Central Coast — these blocks are close to the water, close to amenities and close to everything in between. Today’s aspiring homeowners tend to purchase sloping blocks to save a few extra dollars but of course, then comes the challenge of building a beautiful, functional home on a complicated block.
With an experienced sloping block builder on the Central Coast, this kind of build doesn’t have to be a challenge. At Montgomery Homes, we’re known as the sloping site specialists in Newcastle and the Central Coast, delivering architectural home designs to suit blocks that slope uphill, downhill and to the side. We use an innovative stepped slab technique that follows the natural gradient of the land, guaranteeing a functional, eye-catching house that you’ll love to call home.

Maximise the value of your home with our sloping block builders on the Central Coast
There’s a common misconception that sloping blocks are more expensive than level sites, but that’s not quite true. The land itself is often cheaper compared to a level block — it’s site costs like excavation and retaining walls that make sloping blocks seem more “expensive”.
As the sloping site specialists, it’s our goal to make building on a sloping block not only affordable but desirable, too. Split-level home designs are some of the most stunning and valuable homes on the market — with gorgeous views and a fascinating floor plan, your split-level home may be worth more than a standard level home design!
There’s a huge range of benefits to building on a sloping block:
- More affordable land
- Higher ceilings in the home and garage
- Breathtaking views
- A more unique, architectural-looking design
- Abundant natural light and airflow
- Enhanced street appeal
- Reduced “cut and fill” excavation
- Fewer costs after handover like retaining walls and landscaping
- A more functional backyard and driveway
- Fewer site costs.
You can feel confident with the building process and spend the money you saved on a sloping block on luxurious upgrades to make your new house feel like a home.
What is a Stepped Slab?
Our stepped slab technique is one of our best-kept secrets! Rather than opting for the expensive “cut and fill” excavation techniques that other builders use, we use stairs or a “stepped slab” on a smaller scale so that we can work with the site and allow the home design to follow the natural gradient of the land.
This allows us to reduce excessive excavation and eliminate steep driveways as well as expensive retaining walls post-build. Instead, we can deliver higher ceilings, better drainage, and an abundance of natural light and ventilation.
Learn how it works below!
A) Stepped slab option on a sloping block:
B) Single, level slab on a sloping block:
In diagram A, we have introduced a step into the slab to allow the house to follow the natural gradient of the block. In diagram B, a standard “cut and fill” approach has been taken. Many non-sloping site builders offer this approach because it’s the cheaper way to build.
Unfortunately, this method often results in additional costs after handover including:
- The cost and maintenance of large retaining walls
- A steep driveway
- Increased piering
- Drainage issues
- An asset that is difficult to sell.
