Building a new home is an important life milestone, and at Montgomery Homes, we believe the beauty is in the detail. From herringbone tile, to brick bond and, to vertical stack bond — the options are endless when it comes to finding tiling pattern inspiration for your new home.

Partnering with trusted local suppliers ensures your new home includes the highest-quality finishes and features. Our tiling suppliers are the experts when it comes to tiles, and their experienced interior designers can help you select the perfect tiling pattern during your Tiling Appointment. Read on to see four popular tile patterns to consider when building your new home.

#1. Brick Bond Tile Pattern

brickbond tile pattern

The brick bond tiling pattern sees the end of each tile lined up with the centre of the tile above and below it to create staggered grout lines, just like bricklaying. The brick bond tile look is cohesive, aesthetically pleasing, and less regimented and formal than that of a strict stacked pattern. The most popular brick bond lay is horizontal, but tiling vertically is becoming increasingly popular. It’s also a good way to add the illusion of space and height.

On display at Huntlee, the Avalon 220 showcases how brick pattern tiles can be utilised throughout the home—from the kitchen to the ensuite, powder room, and laundry. Brick pattern tiles work seamlessly alongside other tiling formats in certain rooms, as seen in the ensuite of the Avalon 220. With a brickwork tile pattern across the floor and feature wall, this tiling pattern is then offset with large square-format tiles to the corresponding wall.

#2. Herringbone Tile Pattern

Herringbone

Perfect for drawing the eye to a space, this tiling pattern is achieved by laying rectangular tiles in a zig-zag pattern, generally at a 45-degree angled v shape.

The herringbone tile pattern is hundreds of years old and provides an elegant way to visually expand a small room. The wide v’s create movement, drawing the eye outward to create the illusion of more width.

Herringbone tiling tips: The pattern is at its best in neutral colours and  small amounts. Brighter colours and larger spaces can create too much energy and be visually confusing. Consider herringbone for tiling a splashback!

Balancing classic elegance with practicality, the Airlie 245 at Cameron Grove brings your 5-star resort home. A herringbone tile enlivens the bathroom and ensuite area in this display home, showcasing neutral colourings to add a subtle feature to the room.

#3. Stack Bond Pattern

Stacked tiling is a basic pattern in which tiles are set in a straight line to create a simple and clean look. Vertical stack bond tiles can elongate spaces, making rooms appear taller and more spacious, especially when using slimmer tiles like subways or kit-kat tiles.

It is a great way to add subtle interest to a space without going overboard. You can then afford to add other textures and patterns within the space.

The Riviera 1 267 at Redbank exudes luxury and sophistication. The glamorous Hamptons facade extends internally with a striking mix of navy, white, and brushed rose gold, conjuring a sense of grandeur and romance throughout this five-bedroom home. The crisp white vertical stack bond tiling pattern on the laundry and kitchen splashbacks creates a consistent, controlled, spacious vibe in these high-traffic areas.

Complementing the surrounding bold navy cabinetry, the vertical stack bond tiling pattern focuses attention on design highlights such as stunning brushed gold tapware and signature pendant lighting.

#4. Feature Tiling Pattern

Add a splash of modern flair to your new home with feature tiling patterns. From fish scale tiles to mosaic tiles to popsicle tiles, create a lasting first impression with a feature tiled wall. Adding points of difference that will last for years to come, a feature tiling pattern will lift the room's ambience and add a noticeable difference.

The Cayman 287 in New Lambton has been designed and styled by brand ambassador Shaynna Blaze. Internally, an ultra-modern Manhattan facade extends, including unique popsicle tiling in the laundry, powder room, and walk-in pantry. Adding an edgy vibe to these spaces, the popsicle tiling further defines the contemporary and luxurious lifestyle of the Cayman 287.

How to choose the right tiling pattern for the space

Now you’ve seen our tiling patterns on display, it’s time to think about the best option for your home. We’ve provided a breakdown of the best placement of each tiling pattern below, but here are a few more tips to keep in mind while choosing the right pattern:

  • Room size: In smaller rooms, like bathrooms, opt for smaller tiles and patterns like herringbone or feature tiling to add detail without overwhelming the space. Larger rooms can handle bigger tiles and patterns like brick bond or stack bond, which can make the area feel more expansive.
  • Function: Consider the room's function and the traffic it will receive. Durable patterns like brick bonds are ideal for high-traffic areas, while more intricate patterns like herringbone are better suited for feature areas.
  • Style: Match the tiling pattern to the room's overall style. Herringbone and feature tiling work well in eclectic or modern spaces, while brick and stack bonds suit traditional or minimalist designs.

By thoughtfully selecting tiling patterns based on these factors, you can enhance the aesthetic appeal and functionality of any room in your home.

Best application: Living rooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas.

Living Rooms: To create a timeless and elegant look, use large-format tiles in a brick bond pattern for living room floors. This pattern works well with both contemporary and traditional decor.

Kitchens: For a clean, linear look, apply a brick bond pattern to kitchen backsplashes. Subway tiles are a popular choice for this pattern.

Outdoor Areas: Brick bond is excellent for patios or garden paths, providing a durable and visually appealing surface.

Herringbone

Best application: Kitchens, hallways, bathrooms.

Kitchens: Use herringbone patterns for backsplashes to add visual interest and a modern touch. Choose contrasting grout colours to make the pattern stand out.

Hallways: In narrow hallways, a herringbone pattern can draw the eye and make the space feel more dynamic.

Bathrooms: Herringbone can be used on walls or floors to create a stylish, upscale look. Smaller tiles in a herringbone pattern are ideal for shower or feature walls.

Best application: Bathrooms, feature walls, and contemporary spaces.

Bathrooms: Use stack bond patterns for a sleek and clean look, especially in shower enclosures or as a backsplash behind the sink. This pattern works well with larger tiles to reduce grout lines and create a seamless appearance.

Feature walls: Use the stack bond pattern with bold, contrasting tiles to create a striking feature wall in any room. This is particularly effective in living rooms or bedrooms.

Contemporary spaces: In modern homes, the stack bond pattern complements minimalist designs, offering a clean and orderly aesthetic.

Popsicle-tile

Feature Tiling Pattern

Best application: Bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, and accent walls.

Bathrooms: Use feature tiles in shower niches, around bathtubs, or as a central wall to add a touch of luxury and personality.

Kitchens: Create a feature splashback behind the stove or sink with patterned or textured tiles to make the kitchen stand out.

Entryways: Impress guests with a stunning feature tile design in the entryway, setting the tone for the rest of the home.
