How to Create a Mood Board for Interior Design

How to create a mood board for interior design

Mood boards are a great way to find your perfect interior design without having to lift a finger. With a mood board, you can get inspired for your upcoming build and save your favourite ideas, concepts and design goals in one handy place!

So, how do you get started?

In this blog, we’ll walk you through how to create a mood board for interior designs, home decor themes and more. Read on!

Our step-by-step guide for how to create a mood board for interior design

Not sure where to start? We’ve got you covered. Follow our guide for how to create a mood board for interior design in four easy steps.

Step #1: Get inspired

Whether you know what you want or you’re just getting started, every mood board needs clear inspiration. Take a look at your favourite magazines or check out some home design websites and see which styles stand out to you.

This is the step to explore your options with an open mind — remember, you can find inspiration in even the most unlikely places! While a monochromatic modernist colour scheme might not seem like your cup of tea, you never know where you might find inspiration for your new home.

Display homes are a great way to explore cohesive interior decor styles. Because they’re built for public viewing, display homes feature fully-realised designs made to stand out.

Step #2: Curate your style

Now that you’re inspired, it’s important to narrow down your style. After the inspiration stage, you might have too many options to choose from. Try focusing on a specific palette or a small group of colours to hone in on your style of choice. You can also divide your inspirations by room to help narrow down your selection.

Step #3: Bring it to life

Despite the name, most mood boards aren’t actual boards. Most people create digital mood boards that can be curated quickly and edited on the fly.

There are a number of tools you can use to create your perfect mood board online, such as:

  • Canva
  • Pinterest
  • Adobe Illustrator

In our opinion, Pinterest is the best tool to find inspiration AND create your boards in the same place. Pinterest allows you to virtually “pin” your favourite images to specific boards tailored around different themes. Even Montgomery Homes brand ambassador Shaynna Blaze uses it!

Step #4: Trust your gut

Your dream home should be a place where you feel happy, calm, comfortable and inspired. If you’re not sure which colours or furnishings are right for you, try listening to your gut.

Which style can you see yourself living in for the next five years? Can you see yourself getting sick of a particular colour over time? Try sitting with your choices for a few days (or weeks) and see if you’re still in love with your inspirations.

Remember, creating mood boards for interior design should be fun, not stressful — so let your imagination run wild and see what shakes out!
